The problem of defining what means "learning object" is rather typical of what happens in our research area. The meaning of this expression seems to be instantiated in an ad hoc way each time it is used depending of the characteristics of research projects using it or the purpose of a discourse. General discourse may afford such a plasticity, but for technical and scientific use it is rather difficult and unproductive (unless accepting the production of misunderstanding). It may be why very early, "learning object" came as a key concept in our research area with the challenge of standardization. Eventually, the best definition of "learning object" might be: "what is characterised by the LOM" (learning object metadata)…
