Introducing a "LOM Research Agenda", Erik Duval and Wayne Hodgins remind the reader the ”Grand Challenges” conference in 2002 and one of them: "A Teacher for every Learner: Scalable Learner-Centered Education”, a grand research challenges in computer-science. Ten years after, this idea imposes itself again among the 20 Stellar Grand Challenge problems. Were are we? Did we make any progress along these ten years? If this GCP is still there, challenging the TEL research community, what is the difficulty which prevented it to find a solution? Actually, what would be the (computer-science) solution like?
Note that: "It was estimated that a 'Manhattan project' approach, with sustained major funding over a decade or longer, would be needed to finally realize this long standing dream." (ibid.). So, it seems that the dream will last a bit longer... |
