The "Cognitive tutor" entry of the TEL Dictionary has just been published. This concept is one of the most important in our research area. First because it represent a breakthrough when researcher from CMU decided to leave the teacher as source of inspiration for the cognitive processes at stake in learning. Second, because it covers all the different phases in the life of a project from a model to a product, from controlled uses in labs its dissemination via the educational market. Although it is an outstanding project, was it such a good idea to trade mark? Is it true that tutors based on cognitive principles but not the seminal one may be prevented from being labelled "Cognitive tutor". I wonder... luckily, the research questions remain, as for example the issue of characterising the domain of validity of this approach across knowledge domains and its adaptivity to students actual problem solving processes as pointed by Vincent Aleven. |
