What features to use and how?

please post things you would find useful for building the tel community

Hi!

It seems to me that the group feature is very intuitive and inviting.

However, the TELeurope elgg is growing a little bit too anarchically. I wonder what will it look like when large numbers of users will be posting in it. Maybe we should give it some kind of structure, so that it is easier to find one's way round it?

Cheers

2 ideas (to start with):

  • Connection to the Stellar OA - perhaps a gadget showing related articles according to keywords in user profiles and in group discussions?
  • Embed the STELLAR calander in TEL-Europe and allow members to suggest additional events. We mentioned before the possibility of allowing members to indicate which events they are planning to attend - I think this would help turning the virtual networking on the website into reality by providing members with a tool to coordinate real meetings in TEL-related events.

More ideas will follow!

How about creating sub-groups?

This will make it easier to arrange the groups in a user-friendly and intuitive manner. For example, we would like to open a closed group for the participants and hosts of the Doctoral Mobility Programme 2010, however this group should preferably be under the Doctoral Community of Parctice (DoCoP) open group.

Thanks,

When entering a group, the "Invite friends" option appears on the left hand side. This option should be modified to let a user invite his/her friends, even if that user is not a group owner (unless in the case of a closed group).

Widgets for TELEurope

We are currently working on a widget universe for Stellar. This widgets could be seen as views to the manifold of activities arousing in Stellar. For example, we have a widget of the Open Archive which shows the latest publication. Another widget that shows the latest news of Stellar (by now we have 8 widgets and are planning some more). This widgets could be included into teleurope and will help to show users TEL related information.

Widgets are easy to create and usable in a wide range of plattforms (elgg is only one, but also for example moodle or LAMS or on mobiles). The implementation of Noaas idea could be done for example as a calendar widget.

A showcase is available on our developer platform http://universe.stellarnet.eu/ (stellar/ustellar). The widgets are installed on the elgg dashboard.

Hi Thomas, good work with the developer platform!

2 more suggestions regarding groups:

  • Allow more than one group owner
  • Change "your groups" to "my groups"

Cheers,

I support the suggestion of adding in a Calendar function.   It would be useful not just for conferences etc but adding in new research calls funding and their deadlines etc.

What do you think of the idea of opening a WP5 group to plan future activities/events re WP5 ?

For example, deliverables to complete, review meetings, Flash meetings...

A sort of wp5 calendar. Maybe other WP will follow our example, and it would become a way to be informed about other WPs are doing.

Hi Donatella,

We actually have a WP5 group: "STELLAR Workpackage on Stakeholder Integration".

The calendar is still under development - if you enter the developers platform posted above by Thomas you can view some of the new STELLAR widgets under development.

Hi again,

In today's WP5 meeting we discussed the future introduction of research projects on the TELEurope platform.

In this regard, it would be nice to start thinking about functionalities to support this action. For example - do we want a group dedicate to a project to look different than a group dedicate to a specific topic? At the moment, it is possible to upload an image (the project profile), a description (project abstract, duration and budget), a website...

Where would we list the partners and active persons with links to their profile on TELEurope? this assumes a project group could welcome members who are not project partners and allow them to take part in discussions, raise questions, provide feedback, etc.

What other functionalities are we missing in order to support Projects on TELeurope?

In other fora (i. e. Accessify http://www.accessifyforum.com/forum6/), I have seen that they show the list of topics, and, in columns, the number of replies to the post and the number of times that the topic have been seen by users.  It  will be very useful to measure the interest generated for a concrete topic. Is it possible in TELEurope? Thanks in advance and congratulations for your job!

When I create a new topic within a group, I can choose the Topic Status and the kind of Access in two combo boxes. But, once the topic is created and working... how can I edit it and change? (i.e. to change the Access from "private" to "public".

Thanks in advance,

Belen

Hello Belen,

I had the same problem and it looks like that it is not possible to change the access right after you saved it. I made a little tutorial to encourage for public access:

Best,

Thomas

Thank you Thomas, I think this would be very useful for our users.

Generally speaking, unless there is a real cause for restiction, I would recommend members to make their entries public. This way the potential outreach of the information that they are publishing is wider. However, for quality reasons and for the sake of future dialogue, only those who signed up as members should be able to reply and contribute.

best regards,

Noaa

Donatella raises the question of navigation within ELGG. On two smaller communities using ELGG I have added the vazco_topbar. It's a commercial solution found at www.elggdev.com. Something like that could be useful: admin is able to put links to key features or important groups at the top of every page. It helps newcomers get around much more easily, especially those not so familiar with online technology. It would be even better if the top-bar menu was contextual so that within a given group, the group owner can add  menu items that relate to the group and are only visible within the group.
