We invite the participants of the 2010 round of the mobility programme to post here some words about their professional and personal experiences during the time they spent at the host site.

Please, feel free to also share with us references to any papers, presentations, talks, etc, that resulted from your work.

Thanks,

Noaa

Many thanks to STELLAR for the opportunity to participate in the Doctoral Mobility Program (DMP) 2010 in L3S Hanover. That was great! I got new experience working in different research environment. My supervisor there was very helpful by giving me much much important resources and suggestions for my research which is focuses on collaborative authoring for adaptive learning; that is related much to one of the STELLAR's grand challenges, Orchestrating Learning.

After finished the program, I went back to my school, ECS The University of Southampton to continue working and I include the knowledge I gained from the DMP into my work. Now, I just started writing a paper to present the result from DMP with my PhD work. I'll discuss it with my supervisor there, soon after the first draft ready.

I was very pleased to hear that my STELLAR Doctoral Mobility Programme application was accepted in february 2010. The Doctoral Advisory Board had decided to accept my application to the Doctoral Mobility Programme and offer my a scholarship of 1,000 Euros. My host institute would be my first preference, namely the Open University UK. The visit would be for two months, so I decided to organize my stay in june and july 2010.
The proposal was to work on some preliminary ideas we had about developing a visual browser for research networks, using a large tabletop display.

One of the first things that have proven to be a big added value during the visit, was begin able to present early work to a wider and largely unknown public. In the first weeks of my visit I was given the opportunity to introduce the early stages of my work by doing a talk on the KMi Podium, which has been recorded and is available online.
Working with a foreign team was an interesting experience where, in particular, the brainstorming sessions opened some new insights. It was also useful to get some insights on the workings of the team itself, and relate that to our own team.
For some reason the intensive processes of writing text and implementing the prototype have proven to suffer less form distractions. I am not exactly sure why this was the case.

The tool we developed was named the Sciencetable and the completion of the ScienceTable laid the groundwork to have a demo-ready version available and evaluating the first fully working prototype at the ECTEL conference in Barcelona in september 2010. You can find some more details, pictures and a video of the result on my blog : http://bramvandeputte.wordpress.com .

Overall the STELLAR mobility programme enabled a very stimulating, useful and learning experience for a young researcher like me.

In October and November 2010, I was very lucky to go to l’Ecole Polytechnique Fédéral de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland on a research stay with a grant of the STELLAR Mobility Programme. This was a very interesting experience and I learned and gained a lot of knowledge and many new insights both on scientific and cultural level.

At EPFL, I worked on the same proposal as I submitted for the grant. I developed a federated media search and recommendation widget. Through the collaboration with the group at EPFL, we adapted the proposal to include more social recommendation features and to include some of the at EPFL developed recommendation technologies. A first version of the widget is available here: http://widgetstore.role-demo.de/content/binocs

The operation of the research lab at EPFL differs in some interesting ways from my computer science lab at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, http://hmdb.cs.kuleuven.be. For example, the lab at EPFL consists mainly of electromechanical engineers and a smaller group of computer scientists. This creates an interesting and inspirational blend of people for discussions. Everyone gathers at the communal breakfast, which allows cross-pollination of ideas and problem solving techniques. The lab also has a very international community of researchers, which enables many nice discussions and stories from for example Iran, Brazil or China.

Laboratoire d'Automatique has a strong background in recommendations and web 2.0 technologies (cfr. http://graaasp.epfl.ch). This made it a very interesting host for my research on findability. During my stay, I learned about EPFL's 3A model for recommendations based on usage statistics of resources and tools combined with social network information [3]. This enables recommendations based on actions from people you know and probably share a common interest. We used this as a starting point for our recommendations. I also had many fruitful discussion on widget technologies and usability issues.

We are currently writing a collaborative conference paper and doing an evaluation study of the widget. Through the research stay, I had the great opportunity to closely collaborate with some people I already knew from conferences and project meetings, but I also met many new people and friends. So next time, I am in Switzerland I will definitely visit them again! It is also an outstanding chance to experience a different culture and mentality, because in 2 months you have much more opportunities to experience and understand life in a foreign country, than when you are just there for say a conference.

An most important, I would like to thank all the people at EPFL for the outstanding visit, helping me find an apartment in Lausanne and the many fun weekend and evening activities we did! In short, I recommend everybody who is doing a PhD to use the STELLAR Mobility Programme to travel to another research lab to broaden your horizon!
