PLEASE READ EVERYTHING ON THIS PAGE. IT IS EXPECTED THAT ALL SUMMER SCHOOL PARTICIPANTS WILL COMPLETE THE PRE-SUMMER SCHOOL TASKS BELOW.

Thorough preparation will contribute to richer and deeper learning and to a better Summer School experience for everyone.

1. We need information

Before 28th May, please complete the short survey at

https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dDI0cWlFaDVVTWJHd2NLMXMyTkpsZGc6MA

This information will help us understand you and what you want from the summer school. Please answer as fully as you can. It shouldn't take too long. The form will open in a new Tab - when you have finished it, close the Tab and return to this page.

2. Introducing your work

The programme is designed to involve PhD candidates in a number of ways. These relate to the theme of the conference which is three Grand Challenges in Technology Enhanced Learning. In order for us to know where you will best be involved, we ask that you provide us with FOUR PowerPoint slides presenting your work. You should use 32 point fonts and include a maximum of 32 words on each slide. You can include graphics, diagrams, pictures (static content only).

You should cover:

  • Your research topic or questions
  • Your methods
  • Your preferred references (3 key references) OR your theoretical/analytical framing
  • Your preliminary results

Before 28th May, send your slides to Marie Joubert (marie.joubert@bristol.ac.uk) and Denis Gillet (denis.gillet@epfl.ch). Name the file with your name e.g. m_joubert.ppt).

3. Finding out about the Grand Challenges

Read about the Grand Challenges page (see Overview of Grand Challenges - menu item on the left) to get a flavour of what they are about. Then visit the STELLAR wiki on http://www.stellarnet.eu/d/1/1/Home. Think about where you might contribute and make at least one contribution. If you do not feel very confident, you could ask a question, or add a reference or point to a useful paper.

4. Contributing to the Summer School

  • On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, mid- and late-stage students present an aspect of your work (students more than about 18 months into your PhD).  Find out more about presenting your work in the morning sessions on the page called 'Guidance on presenting your work (morning sessions)' (on the left).
  • On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, students will present readings related to the Grand Challenges. You will be told when you are expected to present and who else is presenting at the same time and your group will be expected to co-ordinate to agree a coherent half hour presentation.
  • On Thursday and Friday mornings, students will lead sessions. You will be told more when you get to the summer school.
  • On Monday evening you will take part in the Pecha Kucha. See sub-page (left) for more information.

5. After the Summer School

You will be expected to contribute to the Grand Challenges wiki after the summer school.

The STELLAR Doctoral Academy Board will grant scholarships (fees + 500€ for travel) to participate in the ED-MEDIA Graduate Student Programme in Toronto ( http://www.aace.org/conf/edmedia/students.htmto two participants. The decision will be based on

Your four slides outlining your work
Your presentation in the morning sessions.

To be considered, you must be able to travel to Canada (let us know if you are interested and could get the necessary visa on time). Contact Marie (marie.joubert@bristol.ac.uk) and Denis (denis.gillet@epfl.ch).
