The Summer School Programme

The programme is available herePlease note that this programme is not set in stone and some details may change because of practical reasons, or because we decide, as we go through the week, that we want to allocate different times for activities or change focus slightly. We like to be flexible so that we can respond to the needs and interests of the participants of the Summer School.

You can find out more about the Pecha Kucha here.

Are you wondering what the 'Group Therapy Sessions' are about? They are opportunities for you to work in groups on your own PhDs in a focused way (you will be given guidance at the summer school). You do not have to prepare in advance for these sessions.

The presenters of parallel workshops will have an opportunity to tell you about their workshops in the morning plenary sessions, and after this you can choose if you want to go to any of the workshops.

For the 'speed mentoring' (Wednesday 16:30) the group will be divided into "rookies" (beginning PhD students)  and "veterans"  (tutors and late stage PhD students). PhD "rookies" will be lined up and then the PhD "veterans" are assigned at random to one “rookie” for a 10 minute conversation. There will be two rounds. After each round of speed mentoring, we will ask from "rookies" and "veterans" to write on one or more post-its their main outcomes from this discussion. These post-its will be kept from each participant for the end of the session and shared later.  The session will end with a plenary, where we will discuss the main outcomes. In the 'Comment' below you can start sharing problems you are encountering, or problems you solved.

The 'Fishbowl' session  (Thursday 16:30) is a group discussion between PhD students and advisors on problems every student struggles with (e.g. how to get started, how to narrow down the topic, how to balance project work and time for the PhD). It uses the non-threatening, yet engaging and largely self-directing Fishbowl format.
