an Open Seminar for students and the general public about the future directions of Technology in Education and Learning.

The Open Seminar will take place in the Palazzo delle Ex-Poste located in Piazza Cesare Battisti and will last two hours from 14:00 till 16:00.

We will first have one international speaker, Dr. Riina Vuorikari from the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, who will introduce the valuable work that the European Commission is doing in the field of Learning Analytics and Technology Enhanced Learning, especially in connecting the academic with the practitioners work.

Soon after we will organise a “local research community” panel, featuring three prominent researchers from University of Bari “Aldo Moro” Prof. Dr. Giuseppe Pirlo, Dr. Veronica Rossano and Prof. Beatrice Ligorio. In this panel, each speaker will present their current research projects in Technology Enhanced Learning.

Dr. Riina Vuorikari – European Commission, Joint Research Centre (JRC)
 Dr. Riina Vuorikari joined the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission in July 2013. She contributes to research and policy support in the field of digitalisation of education and training, and is interested in innovation in education. Her work focuses on Digital Competence for Citizens and Teacher Professional Development, especially through teacher networks. Her new themes cover areas such as Educational Makerspaces and AI in Education, but also impact evaluations. Riina has degrees in education (M.Ed in 1998 in Finland) and hypermedia (DEA in 1999 in France). Her PhD, which was completed in 2009, is from the Dutch research school for Information and Knowledge Systems. Since 1999, she has worked in the field of digital education. Her main interest is dealing with issues related to the adoption of new technologies and innovation in education. Before joining the JRC in Sevilla, she worked as a Project Manager and Research Analyst. Many of her clients were based in Brussels, including educational organisations such as European Schoolnet, and national and regional education authorities (e.g. Ministry of Education). She is part of the Eurostat Working Group on Information Society Statistics and contributes to ITU’s Expert Group on ICT Household Indicators. She is also active in the field of academia: a member of the programme committees for conferences (e.g., ICCE; ICWL; ICALT; ICSLE) and for various workshops in the field. She is a reviewer for research journals (e.g., Computers in Human Behaviour; Journal of Computing in Higher Education; IEEE Transactions on Education; IEEE MultiMedia, Computers & Education; Computer Journal; and International Journal of Learning Technology) and invited speaker for interventions.

 

Prof. Dr. Giuseppe Pirlo, Vice Rector University of Bari – Dept. of Computer Science (DIB)

Giuseppe Pirlo is Full Professor of Computer Science at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Bari, Italy. His interests cover the areas of biometrics, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, computer arithmetic, e-Learning. He has developed several scientific projects and published more than three-hundred papers in the field of automatic signature verification, handwriting recognition, document analysis and processing, parallel architectures for computing and distance learning. Giuseppe Pirlo is associate editor for IEEE THMS and reviewer for many international journals including IEEE TPAMI, IEEE TSMC, IEEE TIP, IEEE TFS, Pattern Recognition, etc.  He was the general co-chair of the International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition (ICFHR 2012), the International Workshop on Emerging Aspects in Handwriting Signature Processing (EAHSP 2013), the International Workshop on Image-based Smart City Applications (ISCA 2015), International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence with Application in Health (WAIAH 2017). He is co-editor of the book “Advances in Digital Handwritten Signature Processing – A Human Artefact for e-Society”, World Scientific, 2014 and of the e-Book “Challenges and Opportunities of the Digital Agenda”, SIEL, 2014. He has been in the scientific committee of many International Conferences and has served as reviewer for ICPR, ICDAR, ICFHR, IWFHR, ICIAP, VECIMS, CISMA, etc. He was editor of the Special Issues “Handwriting Recognition and Other PR Applications” of the Pattern Recognition Journal, “Handwriting Biometrics” of the IET Biometrics Journal and “Drawing and Handwriting Processing for User-Centered Systems” of the IEEE THMS. Giuseppe Pirlo is IEEE Senior Member, IAPR member and Chair of the AICA Puglia. He is member of the SIe-L Governing Board and of the e-learning Committee of the University of Bari. Giuseppe Pirlo is the advisor of the University of Bari for the Digital Agenda and Smart Cities and he is the the delegate of the University of Bari for 5G network.

 

Dr. Veronica Rossano, University of Bari – Dept. of Computer Science (DIB)

Veronica Rossano is Assistant Professor at Department of Computer Science at the University of Bari. Her research activities are focused on Educational Technology, in particular, the main aim of her research is to advance the state-of-the-art and practical use of computation and communication technologies for learning and teaching defining and validating new methods and techniques for the design and implementation of innovative learning environments. She is part of editorial staff of Journal of e-Learning and Knowledge Society and co-organizer of the International Symposium on “Multimedia & E-Learning” 2019 of IV2019. She has been program chair of different international and national conferences and workshops in the Educational Technology field. She has served as PC member of many conferences, including ICALT, ICEIT, and T4E . He also serves as a reviewer for the most important journals in the field of Educational Technology, such as Computers and Education, the Journal of Distance Education Technologies, the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing, and IEEE Multimedia.

 

Prof. Dr. Beatrice Ligorio, University of Bari – Dept. of Education, Psychology and Communication

M. Beatrice Ligorio is Full Professor in Developmental and Educational Psychology at the University of Bari, Department of Education, Psychology and Communication, where she teaches Psychology of Education and E-learning. Her research interests concern educational technologies, new theoretical approaches to learning such as dialogic and trialogical approach, digital identity, virtual environments, online forums, community models, intersubjectivity, psychology cultural psychology, blended learning and online collaborative writing.
She is the Department delegate for E-learning. She is vice-president of the inter-university Collaborative Knowledge Building Group (CKBG; www.ckbg.org/) and since 2006 she has been the main editor of the interdisciplinary journal called Qwerty (indexed on Scopus) (www.ckbg. org / qwerty / index.php / qwerty). She also directs two book series: “Education, knowledge, technologies” (published by Franco Angeli) and “Psychology of Education” (published by Carocci). She is currently the coordinator of the Developmental and Educational Psychology Section of the Italian Association of Psychology. She is the scientific committee of many journals of the field.
She has more than 200 publications among national and international journals, chapters and edited texts.
