About me
I am studying for an ESRC-funded PhD in the School of Education at the University of Nottingham. My research focuses on the use of the social web in Higher Education. For my thesis, I am examining how Doctoral students use social and participative media in their studies, exploring how participation in web-based research communities and networks expands and challenges traditional and institutional support systems in academic practice and professional development.
I worked as a shipyard fitter before returning to education to study a first degree in technical illustration. Following work in commercial illustration, graphic and web design, I undertook an MA in Interactive Art and Design at the University College Falmouth, where I was subsequently employed as a Research Assistant in Knowledge Networks at the iRes Research Cluster. In recent years, I've worked with the Visual Learning Lab (VLL) at the University of Nottingham, initially on a studentship – successfully completing an MA in Research Methods – and more recently as a student intern promoting visual learning and related technologies across the University. I am currently active in promoting academic use of social media in the University of Nottingham through the development of workshop sessions and online resources for postgraduate and post doctoral researchers.
