About me
Theme: The safety strategies of teenage Internet User
The indicative topic of my PhD thesis involves competences and training internet security to children ages from 10 to 14. Planned research is devoted to developing ideas how to support children to be safer online and what kind of behaviors most likely end up not supporting that idea. Outcomes will give a support to implementing the National Curricula general themes, informatics subject curricula and internet security related projects in Estonia.
Description of general situation in Estonia includes a generation of children who have easy access to the Internet, mobile phones and who have coped with internet security problems on their own. The support or supervision from parents is insufficient. So children are more likely exposed to the issues of internet security. They have developed rules and strategies to deal with these matters on their own and main characteristic is not to discuss problems with adults.
There is a need to study and evaluate internet security risks according to psychological and emotional stability value of a child; a need to collect, evaluate and compare actually used measures with those recommended by the parents, teachers, mass media or EU; detect hazardous behaviors of the children using internet; and assess common myths.
For now I have used Grounded theory with analyzing the incidents from children, teachers, police stories about e-safety and bottom up policy development regarding privacy with the Delphi Oracle method.
